Day 22: Page, AZ, Horseshoe Bend and drive to Grand Canyon

On our way out of Page, AZ we stopped at Horseshoe Bend which is part of the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Due to our unplanned addition at this time we felt lucky we could get a place to stay over the holiday weekend and were hopeful we could rent kayaks and paddle Horseshoe Bend or Antelope Canyon, but of course they were all sold out. Antelope Canyon was on our list, but it is tribal and they didn't open it this year. However, we did find out you can get into Antelope Canyon by water. But with it being 4th of July weekend we were unable to do that as well.

Then it opens up to this beautiful sight! It was as beautiful as I imagined. 




There was a short hike to the overlook. 











I would have loved to be on one of those boats. 


Leaving Page...onto the Grand Canyon!
This was our drive from Page to the Grand Canyon, South Rim. 


This was a really steep descent we had to do as we drove to the Grand Canyon. 


It opened up to a different landscape than we saw so far in Arizona. 




 
We made it to the Grand Canyon and Dexter even wanted to be included in the picture. 

Our 8th national park!


Shockingly we were at the sign alone, so we took separate pictures.

After our initial view, we drove to the visitor center and did some of the rim trail. We were staying outside the park on the south side so we had a decent amount of driving to get to our spot for the night. 







After this picture, Dylan was looking over the edge for all the phones that had been dropped. 










The screen is in the way but on our way to our campground we saw a doe Elk. 



While our campground outside the park wasn't that impressive, we did have a male Elk was hanging out right in the middle of it. Later in the evening, there were a bunch more that came along.

Day 19: Drive to Zion, Hiking the Narrows, and staying in the Park

This is our route from Bryce Canyon to Zion National Park.  Our first view of Zion. We had to pass through two tunnels. This one was super short obviously.  This tunnel we had to get a pass for which stopped traffic coming towards us so that we could straddle the line.    This was a view from a window in the tunnel.  Due to the mudslides that occurred a few days before we got there, two nights at our scheduled campground were canceled. I was able to book one of those nights at Watchman Campground in the national park.  This is another view from our campground.  We decided to take the shuttle straight to the Narrows. We were going to decide if we could do it in our own shoes or we needed to rent the gear a lot of people wore.  There was a 1-mile walk to the narrows on this nice trail. This is a rare sight that we don't have people in view. It was a very popular trail, especially with the 106-degree heat!!  He thought he wouldn't get his shorts...

Day 2 - Lots of Driving

 Today was a very long day of driving. 14 hours of traveling and about 600 miles. We made it from Colona, IL to North Platte, NE. We toured the University of Nebraska campus on our bikes and then continued our drive to the I-80 Campground. We discovered that Kaleb, Amy, and Jonah were in Estes Park which was a destination we had in mind so we decided to skip Denver and go straight to Estes Park.  Our longest drive The kids played lots of games  One of our bucket list items was to tour a college campus.  It was super hot so we didn't want to leave Dexter in the camper. He loved the backpack. Madi in front of the soccer column. Madi in front of the cross country column.  Madi in front of the track and field column.  Dylan in front of the wrestling column.  And some more games! It was a scorcher!

Day 6 - Alpaca Farm Harvest Host and Mountain Biking Steamboat Springs

 Today is the day Derek and Dylan have truly been looking forward to. We rode a chairlift up and mountain biked down a ski mountain. It was definitely more for Derek and Dylan than Madison and me. We all had fun, but Madison and I are not the biggest fans of all straight down. This was a lot of dirt and dust and downhill. Way more braking than pedaling. We rode about 20 miles and did enjoy ourselves, but we were happy to put our feet in the creek and let Derek and Dylan do the last run by themselves. Of course, they saw a mama and baby moose on their ride, and we beat a rainstorm as we quickly rode back to the camper.  Dylan and I went into the pasture to see the alpaca. They weren't impressed. These two didn't care for Dylan. This guy was super interested in him.  He got really close but wouldn't let him touch him.  They followed us through the pasture back down to the barn.  We are ready to hit the slopes...on bikes!
