Day 13: Last day in Crested Butte and travel day to Black Canyon of Gunnison.

 We woke up early to do our last ride in Crested Butte. It was labeled moderate and would be more of a challenge than the last two rides we did. We took the same route as yesterday and then when we turned off our repeat trail there was a lot of uphill with lots of rock obstacles. We made it partway up and there was a lot of complaining. We decided to turn around and finish on the same route we did yesterday. It was probably for the better so that the kids ended with a positive experience, but Derek and I really wanted to try a more challenging ride. We really enjoyed our time in Crested Butte, and we will definitely make plans to return someday. 

 We made the drive from Crested Butte to the Black Canyon of Gunnison.

We were supposed to stay at a Harvest Host, winery this evening but when we got to the park we asked about first come first serve sites. We were so excited we were able to get a site right in the national park. We were able to explore the park more than we had originally planned because of our location. We hiked the Rim Rock trail and went to the visitor center. There was a bit of rain so we spent some time hanging out in the camper. Then we were able to check another thing off our bucket list...reading in a hammock. 


We were so excited to get a spot right in the National Park! The kids immediately set up their hammocks!



The kids spent a few minutes in their hammocks while we leveled and set up the camper. 



We took our first hike which took us to the visitor center and was just steps from our campsite. 


Here was one of our first views for the Black Canyon of Gunnison. And yes those are rain clouds!






The kids ran ahead of us because it was getting later and Madi needed to run, so they ran the trail to the Visitor Center. 





They say this is a preview or a warmup to the Grand Canyon. 


















Derek and Dylan went out on a hike after dinner and they saw some beautiful sights!











Derek and I went for a walk around the campgrounds. This deer was so close!





















We went to a ranger program about the formation of rocks. This is a much shorter version:)

Day 19: Drive to Zion, Hiking the Narrows, and staying in the Park

This is our route from Bryce Canyon to Zion National Park.  Our first view of Zion. We had to pass through two tunnels. This one was super short obviously.  This tunnel we had to get a pass for which stopped traffic coming towards us so that we could straddle the line.    This was a view from a window in the tunnel.  Due to the mudslides that occurred a few days before we got there, two nights at our scheduled campground were canceled. I was able to book one of those nights at Watchman Campground in the national park.  This is another view from our campground.  We decided to take the shuttle straight to the Narrows. We were going to decide if we could do it in our own shoes or we needed to rent the gear a lot of people wore.  There was a 1-mile walk to the narrows on this nice trail. This is a rare sight that we don't have people in view. It was a very popular trail, especially with the 106-degree heat!!  He thought he wouldn't get his shorts...

Day 2 - Lots of Driving

 Today was a very long day of driving. 14 hours of traveling and about 600 miles. We made it from Colona, IL to North Platte, NE. We toured the University of Nebraska campus on our bikes and then continued our drive to the I-80 Campground. We discovered that Kaleb, Amy, and Jonah were in Estes Park which was a destination we had in mind so we decided to skip Denver and go straight to Estes Park.  Our longest drive The kids played lots of games  One of our bucket list items was to tour a college campus.  It was super hot so we didn't want to leave Dexter in the camper. He loved the backpack. Madi in front of the soccer column. Day 6 - Alpaca Farm Harvest Host and Mountain Biking Steamboat Springs

 Today is the day Derek and Dylan have truly been looking forward to. We rode a chairlift up and mountain biked down a ski mountain. It was definitely more for Derek and Dylan than Madison and me. We all had fun, but Madison and I are not the biggest fans of all straight down. This was a lot of dirt and dust and downhill. Way more braking than pedaling. We rode about 20 miles and did enjoy ourselves, but we were happy to put our feet in the creek and let Derek and Dylan do the last run by themselves. Of course, they saw a mama and baby moose on their ride, and we beat a rainstorm as we quickly rode back to the camper.  Dylan and I went into the pasture to see the alpaca. They weren't impressed. These two didn't care for Dylan. This guy was super interested in him.  He got really close but wouldn't let him touch him.  They followed us through the pasture back down to the barn.  We are ready to hit the slopes...on bikes!
